Alexis Nihon visited Nassau as a tourist in the late 40's. He became completely infatuated by the island and shortly
afterwards decided to live in the Bahamas on a permanent basis.
He involved himself in the Bahamian lifestyle and organized and operated a racetrack in Nassau called Hobby Horse Hall. The track thrived throughout his ten years of administration and was frequented by many movie stars such as, Errol Flynn and Clark Gable.
During his travels to Belgium he imported the first "carousel" to Nassau for Bahamian children to enjoy. He also organized the Nassau Island Bicycle Race.
Over a period of twenty years, community projects included annual donations of cars to the Red Cross and the Crippled Children's Committee Raffle.

Alexis Nihon also bestowed scholarships in Law, Engineering, and Medicine, all of which were awarded to Bahamians.
He was a butcher by trade, and arrived in Canada penniless. His was a rags to riches story. Amongst his many achievements, was the "invention of the tubeless tire".
Alexis Nihon, with his foresight in real estate, purchased large tracts of land on the Island of Great Abaco. Anco Lands Ltd is the benefactor and developer of these prime properties.
